About me
My name is Oyate Nunpa Win Burnette. I am Sicangu Lakota from Rosebud, South Dakota. I have four children, 3 daughters and 1 son. I have 8 grandchildren. My mother is Lydia Whirlwind Soldier and my father was the late Jim Burnette. I am a teacher in the Todd County School District here in South Dakota. This is my 18th year of teaching. I have taught Kindergarten for 9 years, first grade for 7 years, and 2 years in 5th grade. My goal is to help our native students be free in who they are. To have strength in their identity and to start their healing journey. I have also been studying my Lakota language and one day hope to be a fluent Lakota speaker. I integrate Language and culture in our every day lessons from Math, Science, Writing, and Reading. This is my calling.
